Review: Liq'Lacquer Supramatte by Colourette Cosmetics

I'd been putting trying Colourette off for a while; I figured since it was a local brand I could try it any time, but their online marketing's pretty damn irresistible. Whatever they're doing on Instagram worked on me, and so after almost a whole year of just stalking them, I finally caved (it probably had to do with most of the shades I wanted being sold out; when they restocked, I pounced, not wanting to miss out again).

I first learned about them through Lily Maymac but only became interested a few months later when I saw someone on Instagram using their lip and cheek tints. That was the main thing I wanted for a while, but now that I've tried more of their products, I'm like a fanboy at a collectibles store. I want everything.

All that aside, let's get into the review. I have Reed, Deniz, and King, and am looking into getting Eli and other Supramatte shades in the future (I told you: fanboy at a collectibles store). There's a summary at the end in case you're in a rush and don't really want to read about the whole thing in-depth!

First impressions

I have this thing where I seem to always be fooled by the perspective in online photos; I think that's why I still prefer buying things in person rather than online (also because I get to swatch things! Lip products rarely look the same on me as they do in product photos). But I thought I'd give it a try this time around just because I was curious and there weren't any Colourette branches near me. It was smaller than I expected—I was thinking it'd be the same size as Colourpop or Careline lippies—but that's a minor thing.

When I opened it, I was met by an initially unpleasant scent, if only because it confused my senses. Then it really kicked in and I realized it smelled like peppermint (a quick look at the ingredients list shows that there's peppermint oil included in the mix, but oddly enough it's not advertised in their product description). So there was that initial confusion and brief moment of worry that I may or may not have just wasted my money on a badly formulated liquid lipstick (fun fact: I didn't).

The application was easy—I'm not the biggest fan of liquid lipsticks because bullets are easier to apply in my opinion—so I was thoroughly pleased. Then the mint kicked in and my lips felt like they'd just woken up and taken a cold shower. I love mint so that's a point in my book.

Product claims

I hadn't actually read the product claims until after I tried it because I wanted to go into it blindly. For your reference, here's the product description on the website:

The mattest of all mattes is finally here! Introducing SupraMatte HyperLast Liq Lacquer! This quick-dry liquid lipstick glides smoothly on lips and delivers one-coat intense color payoff which sets into a smudge-proof matte finish with an outstanding 12hour staying power!

Its full coverage yet comfort-wear formulation with grapeseed and jojoba oil keeps your pretty pouters protected and nourished –never worrying about cracking and feathering.
With an easy precision applicator, you can perfectly line, define and fill lips with complexion-complementing buffs and bolds liquid mattes.

ACTIVES:

  • Jojoba oil deeply moisturizes and protects for naturally soft and supple lips.
  • Grapeseed oil effectively soothes, nourishes, and repairs dry and chapped lips.

Here are the claims in an easy bullet-point form:

  • quick-dry
  • glides smoothly
  • one-coat intense color payoff
  • smudge-proof matte
  • 12-hour staying power
  • full coverage yet comfortable
  • no cracking and feathering
  • easy precision applicator

For the shades I got, there was definitely an intense color pay-off after the first coat, confirming also their other claim that it's full coverage. It did glide on smoothly, was easy to apply, and was also relatively quick to dry. However, despite their claims of it not cracking and feathering, I did notice it settling into the fine lines of my lips and accentuating it, which looked a little weird; upon application and when I wore King to church, there was also noticeable feathering around my lips (King's feathering looked like a lighter berry shade, as if the color bled out into my skin). I figured lining my lips might help in the future, but on its own, it doesn't not feather or crack (although the cracking is minimal); I also suggest moisturizing your lips before applying this lipstick to avoid such occurrences in the future.

As for the effects of jojoba and grapeseed oil, multiple attempts to research studies that back up these claims that also come from reputable sources have led to nothing. I even checked my school's library, but nada, so maybe I just don't have access to the right kind of archives. But in any case, if internet blogs on health and skincare are to be believed, they're pretty good things to put on our bodies.

Packaging

It comes in a nice rectangular tube with a black cap that reminds me a lot of VMV Hypoallergenic's liquid lipsticks and NARS' Velvet Lip Glide. As I mentioned earlier, it was smaller than I thought it would be, but not so small that it looks like a sample, of course. It comes in handy and it won't have any problems fitting into your makeup bag.

Formula

In all honesty, the mint might just be my favorite part of this formula. It works perfectly for the Philippine climate in that it's cooling and refreshing, and it doesn't last so long that your lips feel like they're sore. It gives you a lip-plumping sensation that fades after some time.

It's not so sticky or tacky before it dries also, which is a plus in my book (I'm looking at you, Careline liquid lippies).

As for the general feel of it, it's light enough when you first apply it but when it dries, you can definitely feel how matte it is. The first layer dries down to a comfortable matte, but reapplying made it dry down to a somewhat uncomfortable, super dry, and powdery matte that was hard to get off without leaving a stain. My lips didn't feel like they were drained of all moisture, however—I'll give it that, but it was rough to get off and crumbled. However, it still wasn't the most drying in general even though the day after, even after applying my lip balm the night before, my lips needed exfoliation.

Application

I have to agree with their claims that the applicator makes it easier to be precise in your application. But that's the keyword: easier. For me, easier than usual, which is hardly at all because I'm terrible with liquid lipsticks; I have to put in effort to not mess up, and even though it wasn't as hard to apply for me as it usually is, getting it right was still a struggle, especially since it feathers. If you're used to applying liquid lipstick or at least just not a beginner like me, this is great. However, if you are like me, this isn't foolproof. Prepare your cotton buds to clean your lips' edges!

In this product's defense though, it was a matter of skill on my part and not due to any shortcomings of the product or packaging.

Wearing the shade King
Wear

So one of their claims is that it's got a 12-hour staying power and is smudge-proof matte. I took it to the test and here are my findings: it definitely can stay on for as long as 12-hours without needing a retouch but only if you don't eat the whole time you're wearing it. It fades really quickly when you eat and drink, and it gets a little uncomfortable to eat with anyway, so after the first meal I just decided to wipe it off and reapply after eating dinner.

I reapplied it twice in the evening: the first one was after my first meal, where I just refilled in the parts that faded. It didn't dry down so terribly, but after dinner when I wiped everything off and reapplied the whole thing, my lips felt noticeably tighter and drier and powdery. It might have been because I didn't apply a lip balm beforehand.

Is it transfer-proof? Yes!

Pricing

At ₱499, it's not exactly the most affordable of liquid lipsticks. Oddly enough, it doesn't state anywhere on their website or packaging how much product you get so I can't calculate how much it is per ml and gauge its worth/value from that. However, if you have extra cash to spare and would like to try a relatively new local product with a great formula, I'd say go for it.

Shade Selection

They have quite a bit of colors to choose from in terms of their liquid lipstick line. I like the nude shades the most, but I do want to try the red lip from their Halloween collection, which is called Miranda. There's plenty to choose from, that's for sure.

Overall

I love this liquid lip because of the mint sensation, which I've never experienced in a liquid lip before, and also the colors and how it isn't so drying like I just applied paint on my lips. However, it isn't perfect. I'm still pretty impressed with it, though, and as I did in church upon seeing all my ates, I would still suggest it because it's a great product to have in your collection.

Summary

Too lazy to read the whole review? In a hurry? Don't worry, I got you covered.

This is Colourette Cosmetics' liquid lipstick that comes in a wide array of colors, though I only bought three from their nude collection. Upon application, the mint kicks in and cools and refreshes your lips, but fades as the formula dries down to matte. Reapplying this product makes it drier and drier, so I prefer only applying one coat. That's all you need anyway, given that it's a pigmented product.

It's got great staying power, if—and only if—you don't plan on eating. It glides on smoothly but feathers and cracks. It's transfer-proof but hard to remove. It costs ₱499 so it's not exactly on the most affordable end of the line, but to me it was worth it.
